RIVIERE-DU-LOUP, Que. - An autopsy conducted on a 14-year-old boy who died following a fight at his high school found that he suffered a ruptured artery that interrupted blood flow to his brain.

The boy died after a fight with another student at his high school last week in Trois-Pistoles, about 250 kilometres northeast of Quebec City.

Quebec provincial police have said the fight started over a baseball cap. They have said one of two 14-year-old boys threw a punch that knocked the other unconscious. The boy died in hospital several hours later.

However, the autopsy indicated that it's too early to say whether the punch to the head or the fall afterward caused the ruptured artery. The autopsy was conducted last Friday.

The altercation occurred in front of the cafeteria during the lunch hour last Wednesday.

A 14-year-old boy was charged with manslaughter last Friday and was granted bail. He returns to court on July 5.
