LAVAL, Que. - A Quebec mother has been deemed fit to stand trial on two counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of her two daughters.

Adele Sorella was not in court today when a psychiatrist who examined her determined she understood the nature of the court proceedings she's facing.

Her eight-year-old daughter Sabrina De Vito and nine-year-old daughter Amanda De Vito were found dead in the family's luxury home north of Montreal last March.

Laval police arrested Sorella, 43, after she crashed her SUV into a utility pole a few kilometres from the house.

Police said there were no signs of violence in the home but have yet to say how the girls died.

The girls' father, Giuseppe De Vito, disappeared in 2006 after the RCMP issued a warrant for his arrest on drug charges as part of what they called a sweeping crackdown on organized crime.
