FREDERICTON - A forensic psychologist says Gregory Despres is unfit to stand trial for the murder of an elderly New Brunswick couple.

Dr. Scott Theriault told a New Brunswick judge that Gregory Despres, 24, has paranoid schizophrenia and suffers from persistent delusions.

Among other things, Theriault says Despres believes he is a pilot with an organization he refers to as the SSP, or Super Space Patrol.

Theriault also told the court that Despres believes his defence lawyer is actually a terrorist.

The Court of Queen's Bench is holding a two-day hearing to determine whether Despres is fit to stand trial.

Jeannie Despres, the mother of the accused, told court her son seemed fine until the age of 17 when he started to lose touch with reality.

Despres, formerly of Minto, N.B., is accused of two counts of first-degree murder in the April 24, 2005, slayings of Fred Fulton, 74, and Verna Decarie, 70.

The trial was put on hold in February when defence lawyer Edward Derrah requested a new psychiatric assessment of his client.
