FREDERICTON - The trial of Gregory Despres is being delayed for at least another month as a judge has extended the time needed to complete a psychiatric assessment of the accused killer.

After initially ordering a 60-day assessment, Judge Judy Clendening said today that she hasn't received a report from the institution where Despres, 24, was evaluated.

Although she did receive a private evaluation of Despres from the defence, she has delayed a hearing on his mental state until April 24 to give the institute time to file a report.

Despres' first-degree murder trial in Fredericton was stopped on Feb. 1 after he delivered a 10-minute courtroom rant about al-Qaida, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and something he called "Super Space Patrol.''

The trial, which began Jan. 8 before judge alone, heard that the bodies of Fred Fulton, 74, and Verna Decarie, 70, were found in their home in Minto, N.B., on April 26, 2005.

Fulton was decapitated and Decarie had been stabbed numerous times.
