VANCOUVER - A photo of Canada's self-styled Prince of Pot posing with celebrity pothead Tommy Chong seems to have struck a chord with his new neighbours behind the bars of a U.S. prison.
Marc Emery, who was deported last month and pleaded guilty to charges related to his Vancouver-based seed-selling business, has been blogging about his life in a detention centre near Seattle while he awaits sentencing.
"The guys here are impressed by pictures of me with Tommy Chong, ZZ Top, and Sean Paul," writes Emery in his latest blog post from FDC SeaTac, about 20 kilometres south of Seattle.
Emery offers a relatively positive description of life in custody, describing the food as "tasty" and saying he prefers the U.S. facility to the pre-trial jail where he was kept near Vancouver.
He also describes some of the inmates he's met while behind bars, including a 63-year-old Vietnam veteran named Robert, who is serving time for drug offences.
Emery says he has written a short profile on the troubles Robert has faced since the war and he wants to eventually turn the man's story into a short novel.
"He likes the final short profile so much due to my writing . . . that he's going to send a copy to President (Barack) Obama," writes Emery.
Emery plans to apply to serve his sentence in Canada.
