MONTREAL - Mail service will be disrupted in Montreal on Monday as urban postal workers are poised to walk off the job.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says it has selected Quebec's largest city as the next target in its rotating strikes.

So far Winnipeg and Hamilton have been hit.

Canada Post has tried to downplay the effect of the job action so far.

The post office says most of the mail has been moving with minimal delays since rotating strikes started Thursday.

There is no sign of any movement in the contract talks, though Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton says the two sides are still talking.

"Canada Post's negotiating team is reviewing the latest offer put forward by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and is seeking clarity on several points proposed by the union," Hamilton said in an email to The Canadian Press.

"Canada Post is looking for CUPW to propose realistic solutions to problems such as declining mail volumes, increasing competition, and electronic substitutions of traditional mail," he added.

The union has balked at management demands for concessions on starting wages and sick-time benefits.
