BRANDON, Man. - Manitoba New Democrats have voted down a proposal to let every party member choose the next leader.
The party's provincial council recommended the party end its current system of having delegates elect a leader, and move instead to a one-member, one-vote system.
Infrastructure Minister Steve Ashton asked delegates at this weekend's NDP convention to support the change, but many New Democrats spoke out against the idea.
Bob Dewar said delegates at a leadership convention can ask candidates questions, while one-party, one-vote systems can allow people to vote from home without being informed.
In the end, the party voted to stay with the current delegate system.
The convention wraps up today with a speech by Premier Greg Selinger.
