The government is creating a new fund of $150 million that will finance approximately 1,800 various community projects across the country, just in time for Canada's upcoming 150th anniversary in 2017.

On Friday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the new Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, which will help to finance various community infrastructure projects.

Harper said the money will be used to help create, renovate and improve community assets across the country.

“Curling rinks, arenas, walking trails, bike routes, theatres, and community halls in small towns and big cities alike – these are places where people come together,” he said in Truro, N.S. “They are literally the beating heart of the communities we live in.”

He said the program is being launched in honour of Canada's upcoming 150th anniversary in 2017. Projects that receive funding will be completed by the end of the 2017 construction season.
