The prime minister made the comments after U.S. President Donald Trump said he will continue to buy the fertilizer mineral from Canada, but will still look to Belarus for a lower price. Carney also revealed Tuesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada in December. Earlier in the day, Trump signed what is being called a “forever” security deal with Greenland on the sidelines of the General Assembly. The news was first reported by the Globe and Mail on Tuesday, citing India’s High Commissioner to Canada, who says Modi will be visiting to sign a trade deal between the two countries. “We are making good progress in our trade negotiations with India,” Carney said, before confirming Modi’s mid-December visit to Canada. “It is an exceptionally important relationship on many, many levels.” Modi’s last trip to Canada was in June 2025, when he attended the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alta. The visit raised eyebrows at the time because of the previously strained relationship between Canada and India. The two countries had been at odds since 2023, when the federal government first levelled allegations of both foreign interference and transnational repression, including crimes such as murder and extortion. At the time, talks toward a free-trade agreement — which had been underway for years — were indefinitely put on pause, and not picked up again until Carney became prime minister. It is an incredible strength of our economy.” Carney affirmed that Canadian potash will continue to be in demand around the world due to Canada being a reliable, cost-competitive supplier. Trump signs Greenland deal Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have signed a deal on future military co-operation on the Arctic island. Trump said during an earlier speech it would allow the U.S. to build two military bases there. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called it “a deal that can last forever.” Nielsen said Greenland remains a “steadfast friend to the United States.” It’s a significant shift in tone from less than a year ago, when Trump said he wanted Greenland to become part of the U.S., citing global security concerns. More U.S. bases in Greenland The agreement, released by the Danish government after the signing, allows for Washington to “modernize and expand” its activities at the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland. It also says the U.S. can set up “defence areas” at Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east, and that it “may establish additional defense areas in Greenland and strengthen its military operations or facilities.” Washington is to award contracts for goods and services related to setting up, maintaining or dismantling such bases “to Greenlandic sources to the maximum extent possible.” The accord calls for wide U.S. military mobility on Greenland’s territory, including “undersea access.” No non-NATO country will be allowed to set up “its own manned or unmanned military installations in Greenland,” or to have a “persistent” military presence unless the signatories agree otherwise. The accord “does not have an end date,” and if Greenland chooses to become independent, it will agree to remain in NATO and take on Denmark’s rights and obligations under the deal. I’ve been talking about it.” The president said he has asked U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to examine if an export ban could help to curb inflation. Senior government officials who briefed reporters ahead of the trip said Carney will meet with world leaders and business leaders, but it’s unclear if the prime minister and American president will meet on the sidelines of UNGA. As some world leaders, like Trump, move away from multilateralism, one of the things Carney will focus on is reform of the United Nations and selection of the organization’s next secretary-general. Sask. premier reacts to Trump potash deal Trump says he is working on a “massive deal” to purchase potash from Belarus. “The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,” he posted to Truth Social on Monday. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, whose province provides the U.S. with more than 86 per cent of its potash supply from Canada, said Trump’s tentative deal is “wrong and it doesn’t make sense.” “More than 40 countries - Canada and its allies - have sanctions against Belarus for supporting war criminal Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. New labour laws coming On their first day back in the House of Commons after a three-month summer hiatus, the Liberals on Monday tabled a significant piece of legislation aimed at speeding up major project approvals, though it’s already raising concerns among labour groups. Bill C-39 — dubbed the Building Canada Strong Act by the Liberals — is meant to accelerate review and approval times for major projects to get them built quicker. The announcement Monday was made by Government House leader Steven MacKinnon, Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu, and Dominic LeBlanc, the minister for intergovernmental affairs and One Canadian Economy, and minister of internal trade. Labour groups say they’re concerned changes to the Canada Labour Code included in the bill will have adverse consequences for workers and strip them of their right to strike. Specifically, according to a senior government official speaking to reporters during a technical briefing ahead of the official announcement, the changes will largely affect the collective bargaining process for industries that have previously seen strike action or imposed mediation.
