MONTREAL - Quebec police are rounding up suspects in the province's latest salvo against corruption in the construction industry.

Officers with Quebec's anti-corruption task force -- also known as Operation Hammer -- are making arrests and conducting searches around the province.

Provincial police would not immediately say how many people have been swept up in the crackdown.

Jean Charest's government has given Operation Hammer a multimillion-dollar budget to investigate and clean up the province's construction industry.

The premier has repeatedly shot down requests to call a probe into corruption allegations involving the construction industry, politically connected businessmen and crime groups like the Mafia.
