QUEBEC - The head of a major Quebec construction company has been fined for allegedly making excessive contributions to the provincial Liberal party.

Quebec's chief electoral officer says Paolo Catania, the CEO of Construction Frank Catania and associates, exceeded the allowable limit by $800 in 2005.

Quebec electoral law limits political contributions to $3,000.

Catania has been fined $1,330. But with other costs, the amount of the fine has reached $1,635.

The businessman has 30 days to plead guilty or not guilty to the charge.

A special provincial police squad recently visited the offices of the construction company, which lists its headquarters in Brossard, south of Montreal.

Code-named "Operation Hammer" the team is investigating allegations of corruption and collusion in Quebec's construction industry.

Construction Frank Catania boasts on its website that it's on a select list of Quebec's 10 largest construction leaders.
