OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada is ready to help New Zealand after today's devastating earthquake.

Harper says he and his wife once lived in Christchurch and his family is trying to contact friends there.

Harper offered his condolences to New Zealanders who have suffered as a result of the devastating quake, and he expressed his sorrow over the powerful tremor that toppled buildings and killed dozens of people.

More than 100 others, including as many as a dozen visiting Japanese students, are believed trapped in the rubble.

Friends and relatives seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area have been urged to contact the Foreign Affairs Department.

The department said early today it had no reports of any Canadians affected by the 6.3-magnitude quake.
