Police warn of ongoing ‘grandparent scam’ after Kingston resident defrauded $5.5K

Kingston police are reiterating warnings over an ongoing telephone “grandparent” or “emergency” scam after a resident was recently defrauded of thousands of dollars.

Police say on April 28, an elderly victim lost $5,500 after they were led to believe their grandson was in trouble.

A suspect even went as far as attending the victim’s home to receive the money.

Another attempt was made by the suspect to have the victim send $100,000 with a wire transfer to a gold store to purchase gold bars.

“This scam typically targets seniors by leading them to believe their grandchild is in distress. In some instances, the victims are told their grandchild has been in an accident or arrested. The suspects often use generic terms such as “Grandma” or “Grandpa” and claim to have an illness to disguise their voice,” police say.

The call is then transferred to someone posing as a lawyer to demand money for bail. Victims are told to provide the funds to a person who attends their home or to send the money via wire transfer.

“Police wish to remind residents that cash or wire transfers are never required for bail,” police say.

Kingston police have provided tips for how to protect yourself:

• Never act alone under pressure. Scammers try to isolate you, so you don’t double check.
• Call a trusted family member immediately using a number you are familiar with.
• Break the secrecy rule. Being told “Don’t tell anyone” is a major warning sign.
• Take a pause before making any decision, even a few minutes can stop a scam.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized is asked to contact Kingston police.
