What’s playing this weekend: March 20-22

We are checking out this week's new movies in theatres and streaming at home including a new sci-fi movie about an impossible mission.

Film critic Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to offer his thoughts on three new releases you can watch this weekend.

Project Hail Mary (Rated PG-13)

Mr. Hollywood said he loved this new sci-fi popcorn flick starring Ryan Gosling.

“A movie you can just sit back, relax, get the popcorn and enjoy the ride because it is quite the ride,” he said.

“You got Ryan Gosling here who is just great. This is his show. He’s in every scene. It’s his movie.”

Demers says the film is well told, visually dazzling, and has a vein of optimism running through it.

“It’s one of those feel good, great movies, with some twists and turns in there as well,” he said.

The film stars Gosling, Sandra Hüller and Lionel Bryce, and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. “Project Hail Mary” is playing in theatres.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (Rated R)

This sequel to 2019’s “Ready or Not” mixes horror and comedy, Mr. Hollywood said.

“So, you’re going to laugh and then you’re going to squirm with the kills, because that’s what this is,” Demers said.

This time around, main character Grace, played by Samara Weaving, is trying to evade death alongside her sister, Faith, played by Kathryn Newton.

“She’s got to survive until dawn, just like the previous movie but there’s more twists as to what’s going on with these ultra rich families,” Demers said.

The film stars Weaving, Newton and Elijah Wood, and is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. You can catch “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” in theatres.

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (Rated R)

This film serves as the conclusion to the critically acclaimed Netflix series.

“They’re all back to wrap it up I think it’s a fitting finale. It delivers ample grit, and that swagger,” Demers said. “You watch that, you just want to strut down the streets.”

Demers says both long-time fans and newcomers to the series will be entertained by the film.

“I, admittedly, didn’t finish the show, so I was worried. I got to watch this movie — and don’t worry, they fill in all the blanks,” Demers said. “Definitely for the fans, and if you’re going in blind, you’ll still enjoy.”

The film was directed by Tom Harper and stars Cillian Murphy, Barry Keoghan and Rebecca Ferguson. “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” is available to watch on Netflix.
