It’s the weekend, which means there’s a whole new slate of movies to catch on the big screen. Film critic Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to help you sort out what’s worth checking out in theatres. Coyote vs. Acme (PG) Mr. Hollywood had nothing but praise for this movie, which features some of the most beloved cartoon characters put on the screen. This comedy follows the Looney Tunes’s Wile E. Coyote as he sues the Acme Corporation, the makers of his often-malfunctioning tools, and Mr. Hollywood says its fit for all ages. “This one’s got loony homages. So many callbacks. The mischief is there. It’s pretty wily, if I can say that,” he said. The film stars Will Forte, Lana Condor and John Cena. It was directed by Dave Green. The Dog Stars (R) Mr. Hollywood says this latest film from director Ridley Scott is a bleak post-apocalyptic drama. Demers praised the cast, which features Jacob Elordi, Maragaret Qualley and Josh Brolin, as well as Scott’s direction. However, he says the film “meanders a bit.” “It kind of wanders a little too long, but there are some great themes and the future that’s created, you know, it’s bleak, but it’s really compelling what they’ve done.” Buddy (R) While this may look like a children’s movie at a glance, Mr. Hollywood says it’s anything but. “That’s what’s great about this: the kind of aggressively strange collision between innocent kids’ entertainment with this kind of blood-soaked monster horror. I like this,” he said. The film was direct by Casper Kelly and stars Cristin Milioti, Delany Quinn and Topher Grace.
