Three dual Canadian-American residents from Akwesasne are facing charges in connection with an international drug smuggling investigation along the U.S. northern border that allegedly involved exchanging methamphetamine for firearms. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on Monday that three people were arrested last Thursday for their alleged roles in the drug-trafficking operation. Officials say U.S. and Canadian and Tribal law enforcement launched a joint investigation into suspected cross-border drug trafficking activity operating through Akwesasne. “As the investigation progressed, authorities identified an alleged smuggling network responsible for moving illicit drugs from Canada into the United States,” officials said. “Investigators further determined that the defendants allegedly planned to exchange methamphetamine for multiple firearms.” A 47-year-old and a 38-year-old are charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute controlled substances. Officials say the penalties include at least 10 years and up to life in prison and up to a $10 million fine if convicted. An 81-year-old woman is charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance. If convicted, she faces at least five years in prison and a maximum of 40 years. First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III praised the “unprecedented collaboration” between law enforcement officials in Canada and the United States. “Their work to identify, investigate, and arrest these individuals underscores our commitment to securing the northern border and stopping the flow of deadly narcotics and dangerous firearms,” Sarcone said. “As alleged, the defendants sought to exploit areas along the border where tribal lands create unmonitored access points for cross‑border criminal activity. Because of their actions, they will now face the full weight of the American justice system.” The 47-year-old was taken into custody in Canada, while the other two were arrested in the United States. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, Sûreté du Québec and Akwesasne Tribal Police are assisting with the investigation, which is being led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Homeland Security Investigations. Akwesasne is located along the St. Lawrence River at the Canada-U.S. border, spanning Ontario, Quebec and New York State.
