Tornado warnings issued in eastern Ontario end as line of thunderstorms move through

Environment Canada has ended a tornado warning for the Gananoque-Mallorytown area, southwest of Ottawa.

The red-level warning was issued just after 2:30 p.m. and ended at around 3 p.m. A yellow-level severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect.

The severe thunderstorm warning for the area says the line of storms is capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rain, bringing wind speeds of up to 90 km/h, and there is still a risk of a tornado.

Tornado warning ended east of Ottawa

A red-level warning for Maxville, Alexandria, and Prescott-Russell was issued just after 2 p.m.

At around 2:30 p.m., the warning ended, and was downgraded to a yellow-level severe thunderstorm warning.

“Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rain,” the warning said.

Hazards include damaging winds of up to 90 km/h and a risk of a tornado.

“Local utility outages are likely. There is a risk of injury,” Environment Canada says. “Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.”

Red-level warnings are the highest level of warning in Environment Canada’s new colour-coded system. They are for very dangerous and possibly life-threatening weather that can cause extreme damage and disruption. Impacts are extensive, widespread, and prolonged.

Yellow warnings are the most common, and refer to hazardous weather that may cause damage, disruption, or health impacts, with impacts that are considered moderate, localized and/or short-term.
