This is why the Stanley Cup was in a west Ottawa living room

Hockey’s iconic trophy, the Stanley Cup, is on tour and made a stop in a west Ottawa living room on Thursday.

John Stanier, the Carolina Hurricanes’ video coordinator, hosted the trophy at his childhood home in Carp for friends and family at a private event.

“When it arrived this morning, it was a pretty incredible feeling,” he told CTV News Ottawa. “I guess I never really thought it would be in this house here. It was always a dream to win it one day, and it’s finally here and in my childhood home. So, it’s pretty special.”

It’s tradition for each member of the newly crowned Stanley Cup championship team, including players and staff, to spend a day with the trophy.

“It’s kind of done more on geography, honestly, for how it makes its rounds,” said Stanier. “And it just so happened that I was one of the first ones to get the opportunity with it.”

Stanier’s father, Jeff, said it was unreal to see the cup.

“It’s really kind of a sacred thing. It’s so special to see our name on it, it’s just amazing. I’m so proud of John and what he’s done this year.”

Stanier spent time with the Ottawa 67’s before eventually working with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup this past June.

The cup will stay in Ottawa for another day, as the Hurricanes’ goalie coach, Paul Schonfelder, will have the cup on Friday. He is set to host events for local youth hockey teams in Ottawa.
