This is how an 11-year-old Ottawa girl is raising $50,000 for cancer research

An 11-year-old from Ottawa is nearly halfway to her goal of raising $50,000 to support children with cancer. CTV’s Peter Szperling reports.

An 11-year-old from Ottawa is nearly halfway to her way goal of raising $50,000 to support children with cancer.

Brooke Milo has already raised $22,586 through fundraising and bake sales.

“I feel like it’s just very nice, and it could help doctors find a cure for cancer,” she told CTV News Ottawa. “I’ve done a lot of bake sales.”

She has also donated her hair three times.

“I was inspired by my grandpa,” she said.

For the Grade 6 student at Pleasant Park Public School, the fundraising goals and fight against cancer is personal. Originally inspired by her grandfather donating his hair, she is now motivated by a classmate currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

“I was very sad and I wanted to help him,” she said.

Her philanthropy is an inspiration for other classmates.

“She’s just a really inspiring person in general, and I love that she’s trying to help somebody in our class, too,” said fellow Grade 6 student Kalia.

“I just think it’s a really big accomplishment that she made,” said Maia, another student.

Milo’s goals are getting national recognition – sharing her story on CTV’s The Good Stuff with Mary Berg.

“It was so amazing. She was so kind and inspiring, and I hope I can go back on it again,” Milo said.

Her school’s vice principal also travelled to Toronto for the show to watch from the audience.

“It was an incredible to see her on a national platform, talking about her project and her drive and everything she’s doing,” said Lyndsay Foote.

“I can’t wait to see what she does in the future because she has so much potential. She has so much drive. Not only does she raise all this money for cancer research and for kids with cancer, but she’s like a volleyball player, a swimmer, a good student, and she’s a kind, kind, human.”
