Firefighters are crediting the quick actions by residents of a Stittsville home for preventing an oven fire from spreading. The Ottawa Fire Services says 9-1-1 received a call from a resident living in a townhouse on Taliesin Crescent around 7 p.m. Monday, reporting a fire in their oven. Ottawa Fire Services Public Information Officer Nick DeFazio said smoke was visible from the front door of the building when firefighters arrived on the scene. “Firefighters initiated a fast attack, advancing a hose line through the front door where they encountered smoke conditions on the first floor and open flames inside the oven,” DeFazio said. “The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to the appliance. Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the residence and confirmed no occupants remained inside. A thermal imaging camera was used to check for heat and fire extension behind walls, with none found.” No one was hurt. The homeowners will not be displaced as a result of the fire. DeFazio said if there is a fire in your oven, keep the door closed and shut off the power immediately. “Firefighters credited the quick actions of the Taliesin Crescent residents for helping prevent the first fire from spreading,” DeFazio said. “When a fire occurs inside an oven, residents are reminded to leave the oven door closed and shut off the power. Opening the door introduces oxygen, which can cause the fire to grow rapidly.” Fire on Frobisher Lane An apartment tenant will be displaced following a fire in their apartment on Frobisher Lane, in Ottawa’s Faircrest neighbourhood. Firefighters responded to a 9-1-1 call at 8:30 p.m., reporting smoke in a unit. “Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed occupants were evacuating the building and encountered heavy smoke conditions in the lobby,” DeFazio said. “Crews located the fire unit on the first floor and found active flames in a bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the bedroom before it could spread further.” The cause of the fire is under investigation.
