Son charged in death of mother, injuries to grandmother at Ottawa home

A man is accused of killing his mother and injuring his grandmother in a Barrhaven home. CTV’s Katelyn Wilson reports.

A 30-year-old man is facing charges in connection to the stabbing death of his mother and injuries suffered by his grandmother at a home in Barrhaven, according to police.

The Ottawa Police Service said officers conducted a wellness check at a home in the 500 block of Ashbourne Crescent in Barrhaven at approximately 9:45 p.m. Thursday, near the intersection of Cambrian Road and Longfields Drive.

“Last night, an individual arrived at the Hawkesbury hospital and advised staff there that he had murdered two people,” Staff Sgt. Seth Curtis told CTV News Ottawa.

“He provided the address. Ottawa police were contacted and a wellness check was conducted at the residence.”

Police say the suspect is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 60-year-old mother and attempted murder of his grandmother in her 80s.

Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps told CTV News Ottawa that the grandmother was treated at the scene for “traumatic injuries.” The woman remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The identities of the charged man and the victims will not be released until next of kin notification has been completed,” police said.

Dima Sleiman lives nearby and says the suspect moved in about four months ago. Sleiman says she often spoke with the mother and is shocked by what happened.

“She was so nice to my kids, she would say hi and buy them gifts… she was really sweet. So honestly, I’m really sad to hear that she passed away.”

Police say the homicide is being classified as a femicide.

“This is the first femicide and fifth homicide of 2026,” police said.

Yellow police tape surrounded a home on Ashbourne Crescent on Friday morning, and two police vehicles were parked outside.

“Homicide investigators are currently out canvassing that area,” Curtis said.

“We are looking for video and we’re trying to establish a timeline for the last several days with our accused individual to track his whereabouts and residents in the area can expect to see police presence throughout the day.”
