The Town of Smiths Falls says damage caused by an errant hockey puck forced the temporary closure of the Memorial Community Centre arena. According to a news release, the incident happened during the course of a routine ice rental while people were playing hockey. “During a regularly scheduled ice rental, a puck deflected off the crossbar of the net, striking the sprinkler system located in the ceiling high above the playing surface. The impact triggered the fire suppression system, resulting in water damage on the ice and in the facility; fortunately, no one was injured,” the town said. The town says the closure is required to conduct cleanup and emergency repairs. “Community Services staff are working as quickly as possible to clean up and repair the damage and will provide an update to the community once a reopening timeline is confirmed,” said Director of Community Services Stephanie Clark in a news release.
