Photo radar cameras will be installed in 24 locations across Ottawa by the end of 2025

The City of Ottawa is adding 24 new photo radar cameras, including in some rural areas. CTV’s Natalie van Rooy reports.

An extra eye will be installed on 24 roads across Ottawa this fall to watch out for speeders as the City of Ottawa expands the automated speed enforcement (ASE) camera program.

Signs have been installed to warn motorists that photo radar cameras will be activated within the next 90 days at 24 locations, including on Bank Street outside Lansdowne Park and in Dunrobin, Manotick and Richmond.

There are currently 60 photo radar cameras set up in community safety, school zones and “high speed” zones across the City of Ottawa.

The City of Ottawa plans to install 24 new photo radar cameras in 2025, but no cameras have been installed so far this year.

A City of Ottawa spokesperson told CTV News Ottawa that construction is expected to begin in early/mid August to install the 24 new automated speed enforcement cameras, “with the goal of having all cameras operational by late fall.”

Signs stating “Municipal Speed Camera Coming Soon” have been installed in the 24 locations to warn motorists that the photo radar camera will soon be operational. Under Ontario regulations, the “Municipal Speed Camera Coming Soon” sign must be installed at least 90 days before enforcement begins to provide adequate warning to motorists that a photo radar camera will be operational.

Kunjan Ghimire, the program manager of Ottawa’s Automated Enforcement Program, tells CTV News Ottawa the photo radar camera locations are selected based on a “data-driven approach that considers many contributing factors to the risk of collisions.”

Those factors include:

• Compliance with the speed limit
• Number of high-end speeders (those travelling 15 km/h or more over the posted speed limit)
• Number of children potentially walking or cycling (based on bus ridership numbers from the school transit authorities)
• Reported collisions
• Schools participating in a Safe and Active Transportation to School (SATS) Program, which promotes increased walking and cycling for school travel

“Each year, potential locations are evaluated, scored, and ranked with the top feasible locations selected for implementation,” Ghimire said in a statement.

“Currently, the majority of ASE cameras are located in Community Safety Zones near schools, parks and playgrounds. These are areas where speeding is a risk to our most vulnerable road users, children.”

Statistics show 138,303 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement camera program in the first five months of the year. The busiest photo radar is on King Edward Avenue, between Bolton Street and St. Patrick Street, with 15,766 tickets issued in the January to May period.

• Fisher Avenue between Meadowlands Drive and Urbisci Private
• Klondike Road between Sandhill Road and Marconi Avenue
• Lanark Avenue from Beechgrove Avenue to Briarway Private
• Longfields Drive from Mountshannon Drive to Silver Sage Avenue
• Manotick Main Street from Bankfield Road to Highcroft Drive (Village of Manotick)
