Paddlers will be back in the water at the Petrie Island Canoe Club next year thanks to a financial lifeline from the public. In October, the club along the Rideau River said it was at risk of closing on Nov. 1 if it did not raise $78,000 to cover one year of additional operating costs created by its new boathouse. Officials said the money would allow the club to “keep operating through 2027 without taking on more debt while we work toward a long-term solution with the City of Ottawa.” As of Sunday evening, $91,352 was raised to support the Petrie Island Canoe Club. “Thank you to every family, paddler, business and club who gave,” the club said on its Facebook page. “The page closes tonight, and every gift from now on helps build the club’s future.” The non-profit organization says the additional funding was needed after the new boathouse cost $1.45 million, which was more than expected. It’s now trying to “negotiate a deal with the city to make this public infrastructure.” The city says discussions are ongoing, but no decisions have been made. “Staff met with club officials and discussed possible options that could assist the club in maintaining operations,” said Dan Chenier, general manager of recreation, cultural and facility services, in a statement. “Any potential future city involvement would be considered through the appropriate municipal review and decision-making processes and would be subject to approval by the next city council.” With files from CTV News Ottawa’s Peter Szperling
