Ottawa’s photo radar cameras caught fewer speeders in January-September period. Here were the hot spots

Fewer motorists were caught speeding by Ottawa’s photo radar cameras this year before the Ontario government turned off the speed cameras on all roads across the province.

As of Nov. 14, municipalities are prohibited from operating photo radar cameras across the province and must install large signs with flashing lights at each location by September 2026.

Newly released data shows 26,264 speeding tickets were issued through Ottawa’s photo radar camera program in September, down from 30,033 in September 2024.

A total of 244,484 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement program between January and September, down from 291,599 speeding tickets in the January-September period of 2024.

Ottawa’s busiest photo radar camera was on King Edward Avenue, between Bolton Street and St. Patrick Street, with 29,150 speeding tickets issued through the program in the first nine months of the year.

The camera on Walkley Road, between Halifax Drive and Harding Road, caught 17,465 speeders during the nine-month period, the camera on Cedarview Road caught 10,953 speeders, and the camera on Merivale Road, between MacFarlane Road and Brookdale Avenue, caught 10,386 speeding drivers in the January-September period.

Ottawa had 60 photo radar cameras in school zones, community safety zones and high-speed areas across Ottawa, and there were plans to install 24 more cameras this fall before Ontario moved to ban automated speed enforcement cameras.

The photo radar cameras generated $60 million in revenue for the City of Ottawa between 2020 and 2024, with another $20 million in revenue generated between January and August this year.

The city says revenues generated from the automated speed enforcement program cover the cost of photo radar cameras and support initiatives in the Road Safety Action Plan, including engineering and enforcement to promote road safety for all road users.
