The Ottawa Senators are worth more than $1.5 billion, according to a new report, surpassing the valuations of three other NHL franchises. A new report released by Sportico on Tuesday shows the valuation of Ottawa’s NHL club rose 16 per cent year-over-year to $1.55 billion, surpassing the Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets, and Columbus Blue Jackets for the 29th spot of 32 pro hockey clubs. The team’s value has risen by more than 187 per cent in the last five years. Sportico valued the Sens at just over $540 million in 2021. The club surpassed the $1-billion mark in 2024, the year after Michael Andlauer purchased the team from the estate of the late Eugene Melnyk, the club’s previous owner. The Toronto Maple Leafs remain the NHL’s most valuable franchise, at $4.8 billion, according to Sportico’s ranking, up 13 per cent from last year. This marks the sixth straight year the Leafs have held the top spot. The New York Rangers at $4.15 billion and the Montreal Canadiens at $3.8 billion round out the top three. All 32 teams are worth a collective $78 billion, according to the report. The NHL’s regular season begins on Tuesday as the Florida Panthers face off against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes. The Sens open the regular season against the Leafs in Toronto on Saturday, with two more road games on Oct. 5 and 6 before the home opener at the Canadian Tire Centre on Oct. 8.
