Ottawa police officers will be conducting “targeted enforcement” at Ottawa’s busiest intersections this week as part of national Road Safety Week. The theme for this year’s national campaign aimed at making roads safer is “Every Road, Every Day, Every One.” “This year’s theme is a call to action for all road users: drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians, to help reduce injuries and save lives on our streets,” the Ottawa Police Service said in a media release. National Road Safety Week focuses on speeding and aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving and seatbelt use. “Too often, we see lives changed in an instant because of one poor choice behind the wheel. We’re asking everyone to slow down, buckle up, drive sober, and put the phone away.” Acting Staff Sgt. Walt Lushman said in a statement. Police say officers will be targeting Ottawa’s busiest and most collision-prone intersections this week, focusing on impaired driving, speeding and distracted driving. The intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive was the most dangerous intersection for collisions last year, with 96 collisions. The intersection of Carling Avenue and Kirkwood Avenue was the second-worst spot for collisions last year, with 69 collisions, followed by West Hunt Club Road and Woodroffe Avenue with 60 collisions. The 2024 Ottawa Police Service report on vehicle collisions showed there were 19,777 collisions across Ottawa last year. Over 2,000 collisions were hit and runs in parking lots, according to police.
