Ottawa police investigating 2 ‘swatting’ calls at local high schools

The Ottawa Police Service says it is investigating two suspected “swatting” incidents at local high schools Monday morning.

Police say similar threats were made against Earl of March Secondary School in Kanata and Canterbury High School in the Elmvale area.

“Officers responded immediately, and no threat was located. An investigation into swatting is underway,” police said in a post on X.

“Swatting” is the act of deliberately making a false or misleading emergency report to police or other first responders with the intent of provoking a large response.

“These incidents are treated with the utmost seriousness, and significant police resources are required to respond safely and thoroughly,” Ottawa police said. “Swatting calls have the potential to divert emergency responders from real emergencies where lives could be at risk.”

Police are encouraging parents and guardians to talk to their children about the consequences of making false threats and the impact it can have on the community.

No arrests have been made, police said. The investigation remains ongoing.
