The Ottawa Police service says officers handed out 41 tickets over the weekend during a traffic blitz in Barrhaven, Findlay Creek and Riverside South. The initiative put extra focus on major intersections along Hunt Club Road, both east and west, and in Findlay Creek, according to police. During the initiative, officers issued 41 PONs and searched four vehicles in relation to concerns involving cannabis and/or alcohol. Offences identified included: The traffic blitz comes as Ottawa police have been urging drivers to slow down, leave the phone alone, and drive sober amid a rise in fatal crashes on Ottawa roads. To date, 30 people have been killed in traffic-related incidents in Ottawa, compared to 23 in all of last year. “In light of recent traffic-related fatalities and ongoing concerns about unsafe driving, the initiative focused on both enforcement and meaningful community engagement,” police said in a news release on Monday. “Officers took the opportunity to speak directly with drivers and passengers about safe driving practices, the consequences of unsafe behaviour behind the wheel, and the shared responsibility everyone has in keeping Ottawa’s roads safe.”
