Ottawa’s Andrew Franklin won the grand prize on CTV’s ‘Battle of the Generations’ game show Wednesday night. Franklin, representing Generation X, went head-to-head with other generations answering trivia questions in the battle of pop culture knowledge. CTV News spoke with Franklin who says he didn’t think that he would get past the first stage. “It was kind of surreal because I never ever imagined myself going on a game show, let alone winning one. It feels pretty sweet,” says Franklin. Franklin says he was always pretty good at trivia games. He said he would have his wife and Dawn and teenage son, Adam every now and then give him a five minute quick quiz from an old trivia game that he used to play back in the day. Franklin is the husband to stand-up comedian Dawn Xanklin and dad to teenager. “Whether breaking down pop culture or breaking bread (he’s also known locally for his culinary flair), Andrew showed the country what Gen X is made of,” CTV said in a release. “It was really a lot of fun competing against the other generations and I’m glad that I proved that Gen X was the best,” says Franklin, “It’s really nice knowing the trivia knowledge I’ve collected in my brain for all these years could actually be used for good.” The show is hosted by Lilly Sigh, a Canadian youtuber, comedian and TV host. “When I walked out there and I met Andrew after the money maker, I was like, this human being is a computer. If you look at him when he’s thinking of answers, he literally goes into a place as if he’s sorting through data and he comes up and he pulls out an answer. It was incredible to watch. Literally after The Money Maker, I was like Andrew is going to win $25,000 and I was right. So well deserved, so smart, just a calm demeanor. I was like, oh my God, this might be the smartest person I’ve ever met,” says Singh. Although he came out on top, Franklin says his son was a big help in teaching him the current slang and what Gen Z’s are watching and listening to. Franklin says that category was his weakness. Franklin says he has big plans for his money win. “The usual things that people do with money. I’m going to save some of it, spend some of it, take the family out on a nice vacation. They are well overdue for a one. I’m won’t be going to New York, as I had originally had hoped but I’m sure I could find some nice places here in Canada I can go instead. Franklin says it’s sweet that he won but even if he didn’t, it was such a great experience to be a participant. Season 2 of Battle of the Generations airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m and is also available for streaming on CTV.ca.
