An Ottawa man is facing fraud charges after allegedly failing to deliver shipping containers to a person who had paid for them. In 2024, Ontario Provincial Police officers from the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry detachment began investigating after a person reported purchasing shipping containers from a business. According to a news release from OPP, the victim had transferred funds as part of the agreement but did not receive them and suffered a “significant financial loss.” An investigation was conducted by the OPP’s East Region Integrated Fraud Awareness Response Initiative (IFARI), a pilot program that assists and provides guidance to officers in fraud cases, and with assistance from Ottawa police and Quebec provincial police. After an 18-month investigation, a 43-year-old Ottawa man was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000 and proceed of crime. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall in October.
