Ottawa firefighters extinguished a house fire in Orléans on Thursday morning that was started after the homeowner’s dog chewed on a battery-powered heated glove. At approximately 9:07 a.m., firefighters responded to a call from a monitoring company that reported an active fire alarm at a single-family home in the 200 block of Bevington Walk. Firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes and evacuated the dog safely. No occupants were inside and the dog was unharmed. By approximately 9:23 a.m., the fire was declared under control. Interior security camera footage from the homeowner shows the dog chewing on the heated skiing glove on a couch. The glove begins smoking, prompting the dog to walk away, and in seconds, a flame is ignited. “Lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious fire risk if they are damaged, punctured, crushed, or improperly handled,” Ottawa Fire Services wrote in a post on the social media website X. “Residents are reminded to store items containing lithium-ion batteries safely, keep them out of reach of pets and children, and immediately stop using and properly dispose of any battery or device that shows signs of damage, swelling, overheating, or malfunction.” Heavy smoke and flames Before firefighters arrived on scene, 911 callers driving past the house also reported visible flames, according to the fire department. “Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed heavy smoke and flames venting from a first-storey bay window at the front of the residence,” it said. “Crews initiated a fast attack, advancing a hose line to quickly knock down flames that had breached the bay window.” There were no reported injuries, though one adult and one child have been displaced by the fire.
