It’s “All Hands On Deck” at the Beyond The Pale Brewing Company this month. The tap room at their City Centre location has been transformed into an art gallery featuring skateboard art. The owners believe it’s the largest exhibit of its kind, with 276 skateboards for sale in an online auction to raise money for two Ottawa charities - The Ottawa Mission and Operation Come Home. According to co-owner Rob McIsaac, this is the ninth year they have put on this show, so far raising tens of thousands of dollars for different charities in the capital. “We enjoy working in this community, we live in this community, we grew up here, so we have a platform here to be able to do things and hold events, so we are happy to give back when we can,” McIsaac said. “Right now, we are at about $25,000 of bids in, which is probably twice as much as last year.” The two charities chosen this year provide support, shelter and meals to some of the most vulnerable members of the community. The Ottawa Mission supplies thousands of meals every week to those in need and has 18 different wrap-around programs that support all types of needs, from health and mental illness to dentistry. Operation Come Home supports street involved youth, providing drop-in services, health services, education and training for the job market. Both charities rely heavily on local businesses and residents for support. Fundraisers like this are a key to their success in helping others.
