Ontario Provincial Police say there have been ongoing reports of distraction thefts in parts of eastern Ontario involving a similar M.O. According to police, incidents have been reported in Alexandria, Finch, Hawkesbury and Cornwall. The theft involves a group of suspects approaching people, often asking for directions. A suspect will then offer jewelry as a “thank you,” police say, and create close contact, such as a hug, during which they remove both the fake jewelry provided and the victim’s real jewelry. Police say the suspects have been seen driving around in a blue Volkswagen SUV and a white SUV. Similar thefts have been reported in Ottawa. Last month, Ottawa police arrested three people from the GTA in connection with reported distraction thefts in the south end. “Please be cautious of anyone offering or selling jewelry in this manner,” the OPP said.
