Charles Philibert-Thiboutot has set a new Canadian 10K record. The Quebec City middle-distance runner got first place in the men’s category Saturday evening on the first day of Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend with a time 28:06. Philibert-Thiboutot breaks the record set by Ben Flanagan, who finished the race with a time of 28:09 at Ottawa Race Weekend in 2024. Flanagan did not compete in the race this year due to an injury. At that speed, Philibert-Thiboutot ran with an approximate pace of 2:48.6 per kilometre. Cam Levins of Black Creek, B.C. got second place, coming in at 28:14. Andrew Alexander of Toronto finished third at 28:17. Gracelyn Larkin claimed the win in the women’s 10K, finishing with a time of 32:43. Malindi Elmore, last year’s champion, had a comfortable lead for much of the race, but was passed by Larkin at the seven kilometre mark. Elmore finished with a time of 33:01. More than 7,200 runners took part in the 40th anniversary of the race, according to Run Ottawa. Starting at City Hall, runners were sent down Elgin Street, along the Rideau Canal, around Dow’s Lake and back up Colonel By Drive. They then headed across the Pretoria Bridge to the finish line on Queen Elizabeth Drive. Thousands of spectators were in attendance cheering on the runners. Prime Minister Mark Carney was spotted along the track by the Pretoria Bridge cheering on his wife running in the 10K. The pre-marathon and half-marathon day races featured elite men’s and women’s races competing in the 10K, 5K, 2K and Kids Marathon (1.2 kilometres) on Saturday. The Tartan Ottawa International Marathon and half-marathon will be held Sunday along with three multi-event challenges. A total of 36,500 participants will be running in six different races across the weekend.
