The National Capital Commission (NCC) says the beach at Leamy Lake Park is closed until further notice because a substance spilled in the lake Tuesday. Conservation officers are investigating. “Currently, we are working with our local and provincial partners to determine the source of the hydrocarbon spill in Leamy Lake,” an NCC spokesperson said Wednesday. “Mitigation measures have been in place since yesterday and have helped limit the extent of the spill, including a boom barrier that absorbs hydrocarbon products.” A hydrocarbon spill typically refers to oil or petroleum products, such as gasoline or diesel fuel, spilling into the water. The NCC says swimming is prohibited during the closure and other water activities are not recommended. “The public can still enjoy Leamy Lake Park. The park, picnic area, trails, and playground are open. Parking is free for the duration of the closure,” the NCC says. The beach will reopen as soon as water conditions allow, the NCC says.
