The Royal Canadian Air Force will perform a flypast over downtown Ottawa this morning as part of the ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the entombment of Canada’s Unknown Soldier. Veterans Affairs Canada is hosting a commemorative ceremony at the National War Memorial this morning. Governor General Mary Simon and Minister of Veteran Affairs Jill McKnight will attend the ceremony. The City of Ottawa says the RCAF is scheduled to perform a flypast over the National War Memorial at 11 a.m. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier honours the more than 120,000 Canadians who gave their lives in service to peace and freedom. In May 2000, the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier who died in the First World War were repatriated from France. On May 28, 2000, the unknown soldier was laid to rest in a specially designed sarcophagus directly in front of the National War Memorial.
