Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after Kingston Police officers opened fire on a man during an interaction in the city’s east end on Wednesday. Ontario’s Special Investigation’s Unit (SIU) says Kingston Police received a 911 call from a man who was in distress on the Waaban Crossing Bridge at approximately 9:30 a.m. The SIU says officers encountered the man on the bridge before an “interaction” took place and two officers shot the man multiple times. Frontenac Paramedics spokesperson Matt Mills says a man was treated and transported to Kingston General Hospital (KGH) in critical condition. The SIU says investigators collected two firearms belonging to the officers and another belonging to the man. Four SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. Kingston Police say the bridge will be closed in both directions for an extended period of time and ask the public to avoid the area. The SIU is urging anyone who may have information, including video or photos, to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online. The SIU investigates police incidents involving the death of a person, the serious injury of a person, the discharge of a firearm at a person or the sexual assault of a person.
