The Ottawa Police Service is reminding drivers that telling an officer “I thought I was doing 150” will not overturn a stunt driving charge on Highway 417. The police Road Safety Unit said an officer observed a driver going 164 km/h on Highway 417 at Carp Road on Monday. The speed limit is 100 km/h on that section of the highway. “There really aren’t any instances where ‘I thought I was doing 150…’ is going to alter the inevitability of a stunt driving charge,” police said. The driver was charged with stunt driving, which includes a 30-day licence suspension and the vehicle impounded for 14 days. The Ontario government says the stunt driving penalties apply at 150 km/h on highways with a speed limit of 110 km/h. Officers with the Road Safety and District Traffic Unit hit the brakes on several drivers on Ottawa roads on Monday. Police say an officer observed a driver going 105 km/h on Thunder Road in the south end, where the speed limit is 60 km/h. Another driver was stopped going 125 km/h in a 75 km/h zone on Earl Armstrong Road, police said. “Aggressive driving (tailgating and multiple lane-changes) is the kind of unsafe behaviour our Road Safety Unit officers are looking for (and finding) in early 2026,” police said.
