King Edward Avenue is Ottawa’s red light district, with two of the four busiest red light cameras located on the busy Lowertown road that sees thousands of motorists from Ontario and Quebec each day. Statistics available on the City of Ottawa’s website show the camera in the northbound lanes of King Edward Avenue at St. Andrew Street caught 175 red light runners in February and 227 drivers running red lights in January. The red light camera in the northbound lanes of King Edward Avenue at Besserer Street issued 240 tickets to drivers through January and February. The camera on King Edward Avenue at St. Patrick Street issued 29 red light camera tickets through the first two months of the year. A total of 251 drivers received tickets for running red lights after being caught by the camera on Wellington Street at Bay Street, while 246 drivers have been nabbed by the red light camera on Kent Street at Arlington Avenue. The city issued 6,512 tickets to drivers for running red lights through the red light camera program during the first two months of the year, up from 5,580 tickets during January and February 2025. The city issued 6,698 tickets through the red light camera program during the first two months of 2024. The fine for being caught running a red light by the red light camera is $325. The ticket for running the red light is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, regardless of who is driving the car at the time of the alleged offence.
