Ottawa motorists will want to fill up the gas tank today, before prices at the pumps begin to rise. The average price of gasoline in Ottawa is $1.65 a litre at stations on Thursday. Canadians for Affordable Energy president Dan McTeague says gas prices will increase five cents a litre on Friday to $1.70, with prices expected to jump another five cents on Saturday. “I think you’re going to see gradual increases over the next several days, which will probably bring prices up an average of 10 to 15 cents a litre by the time we get to some other announcement at some point down the road,” McTeague told CP24 on Wednesday. Oil prices increased this week after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire collapsed, and U.S. President Donald Trump said the deal was “over” after Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Gas prices topped $1.90 a litre in May due to the ongoing U.S.-Iran ceasefire, peaking at $1.96 a litre on May 7. Motorists could buy gas for $1.28 a litre in January.
