Food Basics to replace Metro store in South Keys

A new discount grocer will be opening in South Keys this fall, replacing the Metro at the Southgate Shopping Centre.

A spokesperson tells CTV News that the Metro store at Bank Street and Hunt Club Road will close on Aug. 13. The Food Basics will open sometime in the fall but no opening date was announced.

“This decision is about having the right store in the right neighbourhood. We regularly and carefully assess our network based on local market conditions, and in this case, a Food Basics store is better suited to meet customer needs in the area,” Metro spokesperson Stephanie Bonk said in an email.

Food Basics is owned my Metro Inc. and operates all Metro, Metro Plus and Super C stores.

Another Metro store is located near McCarthy Park, about a 10-minute drive away. A Food Basics is also located in the Heron Gate neighbourhood.

Food Basics recently opened a location on Queen Street in Centretown, it’s first “urban concept” store in the nation’s capital. Another store opened in Half Moon Bay last year.
