Ottawa firefighters were busy putting out some of the first grass fires of the season this weekend, including one that burned over an acre of land. The first was reported on Saturday in the 4000 block of Dwyer Hill Road, near the Ottawa city limits, at about 1:10 p.m. A 911 caller reported seeing a brush fire burning and spreading that was about “the size of a house.” On arrival, firefighters found about 1.5 acres of land had burned. No structures were reportedly affected. The fire was declared under control at about 1:30 p.m. The second happened on Sunday in the 7000 block of Bleeks Road, west of Richmond, at about 11:20 a.m. Firefighters found the blaze had spread to an area of about 300 square metres. No structures were reported damaged. The call was in an area of the city with no hydrants, requiring that fire crews use tanker trucks to shuttle in water from a nearby source. The fire was declared under control at about 12:15 p.m. Later in the afternoon, multiple large brush fires were reported burning out of control and spreading in the 5000 block on Loggers Way near Kinburn at approximately 4:56 p.m. Firefighters found multiple 10 foot by 10 foot fires. Crews also had to shuttle in water to battle the flames. The blaze was declared under control about 40 minutes later. Warm, dry conditions are expected to continue until midweek when showers are expected on Wednesday.
