Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers that your licence plate permit does not automatically renew on your birthday if you have outstanding fines, particularly if you have tens of thousands of dollars’ worth. OPP said a driver was stopped on Hwy. 417 near Pinecrest after an officer’s automatic licence plate reader (ALPR) noticed the driver’s plate permit had expired, OPP Const. Michael Fathi said on X. Police pulled the driver over and learned the vehicle was not insured and the driver had racked up more than $27,000 worth of fines. The OPP have laid hundreds of charges this year against drivers who were uninsured. Driving without insurance comes with a minimum $5,000 fine upon conviction in Ontario. The fine for an expired plate in Ontario is $110.
