Ottawa police hit the brakes on a motorist caught driving in the south end that has been suspended from driving for 24 years. The Ottawa Police Service’s Road Safety and District Traffic Units social media account said an officer conducting enforcement in the area of Bankfield Road and Prince of Wales Drive stopped a suspended driver. “Wrong plates (vehicle registered to the driver’s spouse), no license, no insurance,” police said on X. “Automated Licence Plate Recognition ‘hit’ leads to a South District Traffic officer arresting a driver suspended since January 2002.” CTVNewsOttawa.ca reached out to police for more information. On Thursday, police stopped a driver with $4,400 in outstanding fines on Heron Road. Police say an East District Traffic officer’s Automated Licence Plate Recognition camera ‘hit’ on an expired plate. The plate had been expired since 2023. “Tell us fines aren’t enough (for some drivers) without telling us,” police said. While Ontario no longer issues licence plate renewal stickers, a licence plate permit does not automatically renew on your birthday if you have outstanding fines. The fine for an expired plate in Ontario is $110.
