A Toronto family visiting Ottawa will need to find another ride this weekend after they were stopped speeding 78 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 417. Ontario Provincial Police say an officer observed a driver going 178 km/h on Hwy. 417 near Kanata Avenue Friday night. “A Toronto family’s vacation in Ottawa took an unexpected turn when their vehicle was stopped on Hwy. 417 for stunt driving,” OPP Const. Michael Fathi said on X. “The driver had their licence suspended for 30 days and had their rental vehicle impounded for 14 days. They now face a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition upon conviction.” Last Sunday, the OPP stopped 48 drivers for speeding on Highway 417 in Ottawa, including seven for stunt driving. One driver was stopped going 166 km/h on Highway 417, while another driver was observed going 158 km/h. In August, the Ontario government will increase the speed limit on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa to 110 km/h from the current 100 km/h.
