An Ottawa driver is facing several charges for an early morning joyride at high speeds on the highway, according to police. Ontario Provincial Police say officers caught a driver travelling at 189 km/h on Highway 417 near Maitland Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday. The speed limit on that stretch of the Queensway is 100 km/h. “Not only was the driver charged under the Highway Traffic Act, but because of the excessively high speed, the driver has also been charged criminally with Dangerous Operation,” OPP said in a social media post. The driver had their licence suspended for 30-days and their vehicle impounded for 14-days. They also face a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving ban if convicted.
