A 20-year-old man is facing charges after being stopped driving 88 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 417 in Ottawa. Ontario Provincial Police say an officer observed a driver travelling at 188 km/h on Highway 417 shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday. “He was also charged criminally with dangerous operation,” OPP Const. Michael Fathi said on social media. “As a result, his vehicle was impounded for 14 days, and his driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days. The driver now faces a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition upon conviction.” The speed limit on Highway 417 in Ottawa is 100 km/h. Fathi says any driver caught speeding over 180 km/h will now be charged criminally with dangerous driving, in addition to the Highway Traffic Act charge of stunt driving.
