Dog that spent more than 1 year at Ottawa Humane Society finds forever home

Ladybug, a dog who spent more than a year at the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS), has been adopted.

The six-year-old American bulldog mix had been receiving “significant veterinary care and behaviour support” since arriving at the shelter in August 2024, the humane society said. Ladybug was found lost, alone, and pregnant, with a mass on her foot.

She was the longest stay dog at the Ottawa Humane Society, and staff say her path to adoption was not easy.

“She had a complex medical journey at the OHS, carrying out her difficult pregnancy and ultimately needing her leg amputated because of the tumour,” a news release said.

“However, medical needs were only the beginning of challenges Ladybug would overcome. With her complex care needs, the OHS had troubles finding her a forever home. Ladybug attended many adoption appointments that were, unfortunately, not fruitful.”

As her story became known, Hill’s Pet Nutrition came forward to offer a year’s supply of specialty food for her adoptive family.

Ladybug was finally adopted Wednesday, after more than 400 days at the shelter.

“Ladybug was our longest stay dog, and there are still many more animals at the OHS who need a second chance,” said Ottawa Humane Society president and CEO Sharon Miko. “The OHS is always here for the animals, and we’ll always need caring people to give pets loving forever homes.”
