The Ottawa Police Service is advising residents to be cautious with their pets after a pair of coyotes were spotted in Orléans. In a post to social media on Saturday, police said two “brazen coyotes” were reported to police by local residents near the Lalande Conservation Park. “Be cautious when walking with small animals, especially at night time. If a coyote approaches, make noise, stand tall, and back away slowly,” police said. “Since they are likely looking for food, consider keeping green bins and garbage in bins with latching lids, or inside a garage if that’s available to you,” In a video sent to CTV News Ottawa, a local resident captured two coyotes while walking through the park. Coyotes are common in Ottawa and rarely come into contact with humans, but officials urge caution when walking small animals, especially at night. The City of Ottawa says it is aware of the animals in the park. “We would like to remind residents that Lalande Conservation Park is an on-leash area for dogs and that feeding wildlife is prohibited on City property. If a coyote approaches, make noise, stand tall and back away slowly,” said By-law and Regulatory Services Director Roger Chapman in an email. “The City will be posting signs around the Lalande Conservation Park area to inform residents of the presence of coyotes and inform them on measures they can take to coexist and stay safe.” Chapman adds that the city does not normally relocate coyotes. “Relocation of wildlife is restricted by provincial law and is not an effective or practical solution to wildlife conflict under most circumstances,” he said. Residents can report coyote sightings on the City of Ottawa website. Police say to never approach or touch a wild animal. If a wild animal poses a threat to public safety, call 911.
